Senate Bill 145 - Call To Action

A Call to Action

The California Legislature has passed a bill that could decrease the penalty on an adult that is sexually involved with a same-sex minor. Senate Bill (SB) 145 is now on the desk of Governor Newsom, awaiting his decision to veto or sign into law. In contrast to existing law mandating that an adult must be registered as a sex offender for committing sexual acts with a minor, SB 145 could lift this requirement if the adult is within 10 years of age to the minor. The bill applies to children ages 14 and older. For example, a 25-year-old adult may suffer legal penalties for sexual activity with a 15-year-old child, but SB 145 would lift the requirement of sex offender registration if the behavior is considered “consensual.” Friends Church believes that we have a responsibility to inform you of potential laws that may contribute to the abuse of children and may decrease the penalties placed upon child predators and sex-traffickers.
