Isaiah 41:8-14

But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, you descendants of Abraham my friend, I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, ‘You are my servant; I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. “All who rage against you will surely be ashamed and disgraced; those who oppose you will be as nothing and perish. Though you search for your enemies, you will not find them. Those who wage war against you will be as nothing at all. For I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. Do not be afraid, you worm Jacob, little Israel, do not fear, for I myself will help you,” declares the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.

Many of us tend to compartmentalize our lives into different digestible areas to handle life’s difficulties.  We take on our own burdens and fight our own battles, hoping we’ll prevail again as we might’ve done in the past. Human nature seems to push us to take on new challenges without much thought.  And even when we do ask for help, it’s only in select areas of our lives, while we often withhold vital information about ourselves from others.

Sometimes we’re so slow to realize that God is encouraging us to give it all to Him.  That He can take on any obstacle.  That there’s no problem we’ll ever face that is bigger or stronger than Him.  That He wants all of our problems and all of our lives, not just a few pieces or portions.  He knows that when we rely only on ourselves, so often the outcome will be utter failure. But the good news is that every time we do fail, He reaches out and says, “I’ll never fail. I can take care of it.  You just have to give it all to me.”

As Christ-followers, He calls us to give up everything and follow Him.  That’s true reliance and total surrender to Jesus in all aspects of our lives. We can’t just give Him the spiritual parts of our lives.  He wants it all – every dimension of our personal lives – ALL of us!  That’s because He’s the only one who can fix, heal, mend, and make everything better.  But first we need to allow Him full access, especially in those areas where we’re tempted to hold on to control.

I’ve learned that it’s hard to have two drivers in the driver’s seat.  If they’re trying to go in two different directions, you’ll always end up crashing!  But if you give up your seat and allow Him to steer, you’ll find yourself reaching a destination filled with joy, grace, mercy and ultimately, eternity with Him.

Prayer Prompts:

Here’s some steps that can help us surrender and allow God to be God in our lives:

  • Today, what is one area or situation in your life that you need to totally surrender to God?

  • Do you truly believe that God can fix, mend, take care of, or heal your situation?  What might be holding you back from fully trusting Him?

  • For the next few moments, silently hold your hands out with your palms up and tell God that you are surrendering your situation to Him, allowing Him to have full control.

  • Now pray for someone you know who is trying to control their own life.  Ask God to help them surrender their life to Him, allowing Him to have full control.

  • Thank God for giving you the freedom and confidence to trust Him to do what only He can do in your situation and in the life of your friend. Ask Him to enable you to continue trusting Him, especially when you’re tempted to take back control over the situation.
