When I was in High School, I went to a winter camp where the theme verses were Colossians 3:22-24. We were challenged to consider: “whatever you do big or small, are you doing it wholeheartedly unto the Lord?” Or are we doing it as “men-pleasers?” These verses have continued to be a heart check for me in whatever season of life I’m in.
Shortly after returning from camp, my mom and I signed up to help in the cleaning ministry at our church. My prayer was, “God, wherever you place us, let us do our service wholeheartedly unto YOU!” Well, guess what we got assigned to clean? The most used seats in the place … that's right, the bathrooms! God has a fun way of checking our hearts. Each week, I would say these verses to myself and I would pray before cleaning. Let me tell you something. God grew our hearts to live out these verses over the next several years. It became something my mom and I looked forward to doing every week. God changed our hearts and gave us joy each week to “scrub” wholeheartedly unto the Lord.
Each of us are in different stages of life. Our lives are filled with tasks like work, Zoom calls, leading teams, raising families, living out our singleness, laundry, projects, etc. God has specifically placed each of us where we are right now. Let’s challenge ourselves to begin praying that God will give us a heart check in areas where we might be grumbling or complaining. Or in areas where we might be seeking self-recognition? How can we begin to do those tasks wholeheartedly for the LORD and not for men, so that our hearts, attitudes, and thoughts will begin to change? The crazy thing is, God can bring great joy into areas and everyday tasks where we’d never think it was possible.
“Not with eye-service, as men-pleasers” - In what areas of your life do you have a tendency to be a “men-pleaser”? You may have started out with a heart to serve the Lord, but now you’re more focused on receiving self-recognition for your accomplishments.
Spend some time before the Lord asking Him to search your heart and mind to reveal where you’ve become a “men-pleaser.” When He brings something to mind, ask Him for forgiveness.
“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” - Now let’s ask the Lord to help us to have this attitude and posture in our life. What is one area where He can begin to reshape your heart and mind to do your daily tasks for Him with a “sincerity of heart”? Think about such areas as parenting, marriage, work projects, relationships, daily tasks, etc.
Spend some time asking God to help you reframe the way you think about these things so that you can begin living all of your life for Him. Ask Him to show you specific steps you can take or attitudes you can embrace to live “heartily” for Him.
“Knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.” - Spend some time thanking God for the eternal “reward of the inheritance” that we will one day receive because of our service for Him. Our work for Him has eternal impact and will never be destroyed, unlike earthly treasures, as Jesus reminded us in Matthew 6:19-20.
